Sensory Garden

The centerpiece of this garden area is a dramatic sculpture of women dancing in a circle set on a basalt column.  Our vision for this garden is to fill it with drought-tolerant aromatic herbs and perennial edible plants that will stimulate the senses of touch, taste, and smell.  In Spring of 2008, with the help of generous donors, we were able to raise the level of the four central beds in the garden and build seatwalls around them to increase informal seating in the gardens.

Each seatbed contains aromatic herbs, and plants that engage the senses.
Planted in the center of each bed is  a different dwarf fruit tree.
Farmers' Market attendees enjoy the seating provided by the seatwalls.

Sensory Garden Before

A view of the garden from the patio in Central Park.  The
sculpture and a long evergreen hedge that sheltered the
garden from the street were the main defining
features of the space.
Square beds surrounding the sculpture were barely visible
due to the lack of plantings.
